Physical Fitness| Jump Rope for Heart is cross curricular learning opportunity.

Jump Rope for Heart is a culminating activity for our Jump rope unit.  Every year Durham students collect money for the American Heart Association.  Students learn through their enrichment classes about the heart, exercise, nutrition various elements in art work. A school wide event is held for the students.  During the event, students participate in jump rope contests, individual jumping, partner jumping, and long rope turning and jumping.  Top fundraisers are recognized as our “Royal Court” along with top class winners, art contest winners and Grand Champion jumping winners.

Physical Education
Sstudents learn various single rope skills, partner skills, short and long rope skills. The upper grades try their legs at a jump rope routine which may include all the above.  They also learn about heart rate and their FIT zone (frequency, intensity and time).

Library
Students learn various heart health lessons from HEART POWER! Short videos and songs help students to remember and enhance their learning.

Art
Children use various mediums to express health concepts, as well as basic anatomy. They create projects to show what they have learned about the human body.  Students have created wall hangings and bowls made of clay, poster drawing according to specific guidelines by Jump Rope for Heart, tissue projects, etc.

Science
There is a special emphasis on the human circulatory system. Obviously children are learning how important it is to exercise and care for their hearts, and that means the entire circulatory system.

Computer
Students visit the American Heart Association Website and select various links to learn about exercise, health and fundraising.  Each child is required to calculate and graph their FIT zone results.
