The Reading and Language Arts Program at Durham has top priority at every grade level, Pre-K to 5th. Beginning in Pre-K, emphasis is given to the 4 principal strands of Language Arts: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
We believe that good reading skills provide a solid foundation for every subject area, including Social Studies, Math, Science, and Technology. From the beginning, Durham students have opportunities to hear, read, and interpret classic works of children’s literature. They learn to appreciate these works through discussion, dramatization, illustration, and other activities designed to extend their knowledge of different genres and universal themes.
Throughout all grade levels, children are also taught to write. Beginning with alphabet, rhyming words, and playing with sounds and their representations, they develop an awareness of the written language. They are encouraged to use their imaginations to create their own works for presentation and publication.
By the intermediate grades, the goal is for students to be able to organize their ideas into compositions such as explanatory, comparative, and persuasive essays, as well as fictional or personal narratives. We know that their skills in Language Arts will stay with them and carry them through their academic careers and into the larger world. |
