Math | Building the Math Tapestry
Durham Elementary math curriculum is surprisingly coherent. It is comprised of a whole tapestry where each item exists as part of a larger design.

For example, whole numbers and fractions are related in such a way that fractions extend directly from whole numbers.

When a smooth transition from whole numbers to fractions is properly made through classroom instruction, fraction-phobia is greatly reduced.

Math teachers are sufficiently precise, so children can reconstruct the tapestry stepby-step when necessary.

if you tell a fifth grader that two objects are similar if they are the same shape but not necessarily the same size, it begs the question of what “same shape” means.

it is important that elementary school mathematics, like all mathematics, be built on reasoning.

When students are emboldened to make moves on their own in mathematics, they becomes sequential thinkers, and sequential thinking is the engine that drives problemsolving.
