At the contest, a quote form each book is read, and the students Name That Book. Nearly 80 schools compete for first, second, and third place. It is always a very competitive and fun contest.
The HISD Department of Library Services produces and coordinates the contest each year to get students excited about reading and to teach them about library services.

The Name That Book Contest has a rich tradition at HISD, originating at River Oaks Elementary School more than 20 years ago.
When the contest became too large for one school to organize, the Department of Library Services stepped in and expanded the program to include other elementary schools.
In the following years, elementary participants who had become middle-grade students, and their parents, requested that the contest expand to include middle-grade schools.
Five years ago, HISD Library Services added kindergarten and high-school contests, making the program K-12 in scope. Barnes and Noble Booksellers sponsored last year’s program with events leading up to the contest and $12,000 in prizes. |
