- Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. (Physical Education skill lessons, Winter Festival dance routines, Jump Rope for Heart, and Field Day Activities.
- Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Each year students are introduced to new concepts of movement (different types of jumps or ball handling skills) that let them apply strategies and tactics for more advanced physical activities.
- Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Forty-five (45) minutes of Physical Education weekly (Jump Rope for Heart Program) and daily physical activity (Durham Dashers Walk/Jog Program) encourage children to develop an active, healthy lifestyle. These activities can be done anywhere and every day. Students learn there are many opportunities to be physically active.
- Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. Jump Rope for Heart, Field Day, the Fitness Gram, Durham Dashers and C.A.T.C.H. (Coordinated Approach to Children’s Health program) are fun for students and let them associate health-enhancing activities with physical activity. They learn about specific behaviors that affect their overall health throughout the curriculum.
- Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. Teamwork, safety, cooperation and good sportsmanship are all essential concepts taught during the programs. Students learn to work together as a team to benefit themselves, their school and their community. The above programs encourage students to have a positive attitude toward group success while engaged in physical activity.
- Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction. This standard is what these programs are all about. Students of all ages learn to value physical activity as fun, exciting, challenging and a means for self-expression. They also see that getting active is a great way to have fun with friends.
